Battery and car batteries , boosting and the car won’t start in London Ontario

Often when I get a call about a car that won’t start the first thing that comes to most peoples mind is the battery – so the phone conversation starts with ” I think I need a battery ” .
This is logical thinking to most car owners and drivers but there is a bit of investigation that needs to occur first before just putting a battery in . The battery might be old and that’s ok to replace it as it may be sulphated and showing its age but the root of the problem may something else . The things we check are the alternator and charging systems ( this is what keeps your battery in a fully charged state ) . The connections which are positive and grounds ( often overlooked and a great deal of batteries get replaced unnecessarily when missed ) . The starter motor is checked for how many amps it draws during a start ( it can even kill off a new battery if it draws too much ) . The step also is to charge up the original battery if the battery looks salvageable and load test it to see if it will come back . Another test is a draw test where we see if something like a light is left on in the car or something more tricky like a dime that is stuck in a cigarette lighter or I have even seen brake lights that come on in the night ( that is called intermittent ) and or even a turn signal comes on and kills a battery . Cars and many vehicles are computer controlled now and even the computer and clock memory or radio do kill the battery little by little over night from not having the car running to recharge battery – so if you park at an airport for a weeks vacation or don’t use car for a while you can get a solar panel that plugs into cigarette lighter that will recharge automatically .
