As summer has come to an end, the cool season is just around the corner. Hopefully our September will give us some extended sunny days (please!). Now is the time to start preparing for those cold days ahead to prevent any unexpected breakdowns.

Here is my top 5 list to add to my ‘To Do’ list for vehicle care:

1. Check your antifreeze. Without adequate antifreeze, your car’s engine, radiator and hoses are not suitably protected from freezing. Antifreeze should be changed annually, or as recommended in the owner’s manual. Flush the cooling system every 24 months.

2. Check your battery! Harsh weather can cut a battery’s life in half so make sure to check it before the weather hits. If it is three or more years old, it should be tested and replaced if necessary. Clean and tighten battery terminals, as loose or corroded connections can cause symptoms of a weak or dead battery.

3. Change your wipers. Check for signs of cracking or tearing and replace if there is evidence of streaking or smearing. If you live in an area with severe weather conditions, consider specialized winter wiper blades made to withstand the harshest of conditions. Carry spare winter washer fluid in your vehicle. Make sure all chips in the windshield are repaired. Small chips can turn into dangerous cracks with the extremes of cold temperatures and extended heater and defroster use in the car.

4. Keep tires at the proper pressure. Having a tire gauge is very inexpensive and easy to keep in your glove box. Car Care Canada recommends winter tires for maximum adherence to icy road conditions.

5. Engine performance. A poorly maintained engine is hard to start in cold weather, if it starts at all. It may run rough and lose power. Have fuel, ignition and emission control systems checked, necessary components replaced and adjustments made.
